Rituale Romanum [04.15.02]
My paternal grandfather (whom I mentioned in my "Mortality" entry) died recently, and among the items in his estate are thousands of books, mostly science fiction and Louis L'amour novels. I have been fortunate enough to receive some of these books, including one that is particularly fascinating, namely, The Complete Book of Spells, Ceremonies, and Magic, by Migene Gonzˇlez-Wippler, a tome rich with arcane knowledge about ancient religions, various forms of divination, and the hierarchies of angels and demons, among other things. A section that caught my eye was "Possession and Exorcism," which featured a conjuration that is part of a ceremony for exorcizing a house troubled by an evil spirit. (This stuff is scintillating!) You'll find the transcription below, and look forward to something a bit darker tomorrow. [Cue villainous music.]
I adjure thee, O serpent of old, by the Judge of the living and the dead; by the Creator of the world who hath power to cast into hell, that thou depart forthwith from this house. He that commandeth thee, accursed demon, is He that commanded the winds, and the sea and the storm. He that commands thee, is He that ordered thee to be hurled down from the height of heaven into the lower parts of the earth. He that commands thee is He that bade thee depart from Him. Hearken then, Satan and fear. Get thee gone, vanquished and cowed, when thou art bidden in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ who will come to judge the living and the dead by fire. Amen.
[Exit Orpheum.]
